I also can’t help but blame my own inexperience with Wild Hearts at that point, and that frustrating (near) failure made figuring out what did work all the more rewarding. I got knocked around an embarrassing amount before finally claiming victory.ĭespite the difficulty I described in this instance, I did only “die” one time, and I never failed a quest. Unable to build, avoiding the monstrous beast’s attacks became very difficult, especially with the katana’s kit. You can climb any Kemono and attack weak points to replenish these materials, but I frustratingly failed to reach the only remaining spots. See, building Karakuri requires thread, which is usually overabundant, but it had run scarce in the area we fought in. I’ll eventually develop the skill to do this under pressure, but the loss of six-plus Karakuri at once with no payoff can be a ruinous setback. This large wall stopped the Kingtusk in its tracks and hilariously flinged it away - if I built it correctly. If I built six crates in a rectangle formation, it would create a Bulwark. The third “basic” Karakuri I unlocked is the torch, which, once erected, allowed me to coat my weapon in flames or deal a satisfying fire attack to the vulnerable, plant-based Kemono.īuilding Karakuri in certain ways leads to entirely new structures. (No, Fortnite is not in this genre.) With Karakuri, I could do things like build crates in an instant to leap off of and deal devastating attacks, or build springs to dash away in place of a dodge when my stamina was low. This Karakuri mechanic really sets Wild Hearts apart from anything else in the genre, to my knowledge. There’s more to Wild Hearts than just wielding huge weapons against giant animals so you can make new pants, though – you can build stuff on the fly mid-combat. It tends to come with fighting big, agile creatures in games in general, and there’s some feedback I’d like to be a bit more “crunchy” and obvious, but learning the systems and how to out-maneuver the bit of jank is just part of the genre at this point. There was a bit of jank in the build I played, especially with the camera and targeting. Generally, Wild Hearts’ combat feels good and leads to plenty of hype moments. There’s a mechanical bear friend to help you learn the ropes, but these tutorials are pretty bare bones and left me to put two-and-two together to discover how to best use the weapon. There are eight totally different weapon types to master ranging in technical difficulty from very easy to grasp, like the Karakuri Katana to simple yet demanding of skill, like the parasol-like Wagasa to requiring both understanding and skill, like the bow. This might also change as the game progresses – I was only able to fight three monsters and unlock four different upgrades, after all. This has me worried about the longevity of Wild Hearts, but may be music to others’ ears who prefer less grindy, less min-maxy experiences. In the middle of this, you can take “breaks” to hunt specific monsters you’ve already encountered in the story by starting optional quests from any campfire or the map.Ĭompleting these unlocks more optional quests, grants points to unlock new building abilities, and rewards those sweet sweet mats to upgrade your equipment, which is an easy-to-understand, streamlined process. These main quests may range from hunting a specific Kemono – the huge beasts that have fused with nature itself – to reaching a new point on the map. This could change down the line, but it seems like you’ll have main story quests that are active in the world, shown in the top left of the screen, separate from optional quests you need to manually trigger. The hunt-craft-hunt loop of Wild Hearts isn’t so unfamiliar to me, but the presentation and seamless storytelling were unexpected. I just wanted to play more, and ended up completing every optional quest there was. It sounds like I must have progressed in Wild Hearts a lot, but I got to the “end” of the story content available in this early build fairly quickly. As Burnham calls Vance, the episode sets it up that this is the only way that Starfleet can survive this situation - although why that is the case simply rings hollow. The Discovery is surrounded by a small fleet of vessels, yet it easily manages to outmaneuver all of them to continue firing on the base. She clearly has little faith in the defensive capabilities of Starfleet's base of operations. It feels desperate (nothing wrong with that to be honest) but it also feels a bit unusual that she would offer. Burnham, recognizing that Osyrra is just fine with blowing a hole in Starfleet HQ, hurries to tell her she will speak to the Admiral, to convince him to let them go. Join us now for a look at the ups and downs for this week, starting with the downs. There are a lot of balls in the air going into this final episode of the season - how to they all land and are those landings satisfying? The truth is.yes and no. A Trill hologram in Starfleet? Sounds amazing.Meanwhile, Saru and Culber and, unbeknownst to them, Adira, are still on the dilithium planet with Su'kal. If there's one huge plot point to watch in Discovery Season 4, it's almost certainly the return of Gray. Will Gray be a fully holographic character? If so, it wouldn't be the first time Star Trek has had an intelligent (and brilliant!) hologram as a full member of the crew. But, the second, and much more compelling plot point will surely be the full return of Gray. First, we might learn a lot more about how the Tal symbiont is different from other Trill we have known (like Dax). This seems to mean two things that could happen in Season 4. The intelligent holographic system on the crashed Kelpien ship somehow recognized the consciousness of Gray, even though, in theory, Gray only exists inside the memory of the Tal symbiont. With all respect to Captain Michael Burnham's big new job (hooray!), the biggest news in the Discovery Season 3 finale was the sudden return of Gray (Ian Alexander) with the new revelation that certain holographic technology could allow Gray's consciousness to be "seen." When Adira beamed down to the surface of the dilithium planet, they were shocked to see Gray again, but even more shocked that Saru and Culber could see him, too! **SPOILER WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, specifically the finale, "That Hope Is You Part 2"** Here are the five biggest questions created by the Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 finale, and how Season 4 might address them! Let's fly! "That Hope Is You Part 2," wrapped-up some pretty big stuff - from the mystery of the Burn, to the fate of the Emerald Chain - but some character-oriented plot points are still fairly huge question marks for Season 4. If anyone was ever in doubt that Discovery was "real" Star Trek, this season, and this finale of Discovery should give the haters some pause.īut, that doesn't mean there aren't still a few loose ends floating around in the DISCO-verse. There's a classic Next Generation-esque vibe to the episode "That Hope Is You Part 2," with a touch of the open-ended adventure of The Original Series. If DISCO has spent the last few years being something that feels like "not your parents' Star Trek," the last few moments of the Season 3 finale will make you think, well, maybe this is a little bit like my parents' Star Trek after all. This time, Discovery's season finale ends with boundless optimism and a renewed sense of purpose. Unlike the massive cliffhanger of Season 2, the ending of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 didn't shove the crew into a wormhole and leave us wondering what would happen when they came out on the other side. They allow you to go beyond the requirements of the liquids rule so long as you are bringing reasonable quantities of your medication in your carry-on. TSA is pretty relaxed about medication in carry on bags. Keep in mind that there are special rules for consuming alcohol on a plane so make sure that you read more about bringing alcohol on a plane. That’s because alcohol becomes flammable at that level. This also means that you can bring along your own alcohol as long as the alcohol is in a container no greater than 3.4 ounces.Īlcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol (over 140 proof), including grain alcohol and 151 proof rum are not allowed on the plane. Passengers are permitted to bring in mini bottles of alcohol but they must fit in the quart-sized bag. You are allowed to bring alcohol with you on a plane as long as you comply with TSA 3-1-1 rule and also FAA rules. Here is a non-exhaustive list of food items that will fall under the liquids rule:Īlcohol has its own set of unique rules when it comes to airport security. In those cases, the food will be treated as a liquid which means that it will be subject to the 3-1-1 Rule. It gets a little tricky when it comes to food that is in a liquid or semi-liquid state. So it is really smart to properly package up your food so that things don’t get messy and you don’t slow down the security line. The key thing to keep in mind is that you may have to remove your food from your carry-on for x-ray scanning. Many travelers are pretty surprised to find out that they can bring along a lot of different types of food with them through security and on the plane.įor the most part, you can bring reasonable quantities of just about any type of solid food you can think of. What foods can be brought in your carry-on item through TSA airport security is one of the most common travel questions related to TSA that I see and hear. Sunscreen in your carry-on is still subject to the standard TSA liquids rule. Note, in 2021, there was an accidental publication about TSA allowing bigger quantities of sunscreen to go through but that is no longer the case. If they are in a gel-like state that is typically going to be considered a liquid but if they are in more of a solid state (like deodorant often is) then that should be considered a solid. It really just comes down to the type of state they are in. Many personal items like deodorant, toothpaste, and other toiletries can fall into a bit of a gray area. Knowing how to store your liquids in a bag is pretty easy but the much more difficult question sometimes is what actually is considered a liquid? However, if you are traveling with a standard boarding pass then you will need to remove this bag from your carry-on as you make your way through security. If you have TSA Pre-Check then you do not have to remove your quart sized bag from your carry-on. The last requirement is that you are allowed 1 quart size bag per person. The first “one” means that your liquids must fit within 1 quart-sized resealable bag. The “three” indicates that your liquids must be contained within a container no larger than 3.4 fluid ounces or (100 mL).Probably the most well-known TSA carry-on rule is the liquids rule which is also known as the “3-1-1 rule.” Related: CLEAR Airport & Stadium Security Review Liquids (3-1-1 Rule) The second major difference relates to bringing liquids in your carry-on which I will talk about next. The first major difference is that you can keep your large electronics such as laptops in the carry-on. The last two benefits are the ones that really affect how you get your carry-on through security. Not only do you get to access the expedited security checkpoint, but you also get the following benefits: TSA Pre-Check allows you to bypass the main security line and head to a line that is usually shorter and faster. If you have TSA Pre-Check the rules for transporting your carry-on will be a little bit different. Tip: Use the free app WalletFlo to help you travel the world for free by finding the best travel credit cards and promotions! TSA Pre-Check exemptions TSA accepts a lot of different types of ID and even if you forgot or lost your ID, there is still a way for you to get through (you just will need extra time in that case). Before you ever get a chance to take your carry-on luggage through the TSA airport security checkpoint, you first need to show a valid ID and your boarding pass. In Standby mode, the logo will simply appear white, like the rest of the lights on the keypad. When the keypad lights up as you approach it, the Abode logo will also light up and display the logo in one of three colours to show you which mode the alarm is set to at that time Conversely, upon coming home, you can buy yourself some time to get into your home and disable the alarm before the siren starts alerting your neighbours. The reason for the countdown timers, if you haven’t already guessed, is so that upon setting the alarm as you either go to bed or leave home, you have time to get yourself ready before the alarm and trigger devices become active. You can have sensors to be inactive of course, and ‘Active immediately’, which means they’ll trigger an alarm as soon as the alarm is set regardless of the countdown timer. When you set up any motion or contact sensor in the Abode app, you can have it so that the sensors don’t trip any alarm until the countdown timer you would have previously set, has expired, which is what is referred to by the option ‘Active after countdown timer’. As you can deduce, Abode doesn’t differentiate between Sleep and Home modes, which sort of makes sense, but if you set the alarm to Home in the Abode app, it’ll always show it as set to Home mode in HomeKit, which avoids any potential confusion. They are Standby (Off in HomeKit), Away (same as HomeKit), and Home (which is the same as Home and Night/Sleep in HomeKit). If you’re not familiar with how the Abode alarm system works, essentially you have three modes, all of which (sort of) correspond with the four modes you find in HomeKit. For either mode, you can have the sensor to be Inactive, Active after countdown timer, or Active immediately. So, if you either have an Abode system and fancied the idea of a separate alarm panel, or don’t, but are enticed by the idea of one, read on… PACKAGING/CONTENTSĪs the keypad and the built-in motion sensor are essentially security devices, for the motion sensor, you have the option to set it up as a trigger for alarms in both the Home and Away modes. Without one of these, it’s just an expensive paperweight. With me having the Adobe Iota setup already in place, alongside a multitude of Aqara hubs with built-in sirens/speakers, I decided a while ago to take the plunge and buy the Abode Keypad 2 and add it to my Abode system, which I should state, is required for the keypad 2 to be used, whether it’s the Iota Gateway, that includes a camera, or the Smart Gateway, that doesn’t. Of course, automations and/or smart buttons can be used to arm/disarm your alarm setup, but call me old-fashioned, with having a dedicated panel, along with buttons for your code and the different alarm modes, is something that I’ve long wanted – it just feels ‘proper’ when you add something like this, even if it’s something not really necessary. Whilst the Aqara system is probably the cheapest, and most customisable, mostly due to the abundance of choice and cost of its sensors, the one thing it currently lacks is a dedicated alarm keypad. When it comes to alarm systems, HomeKit doesn’t fare too great at present, with offerings from the budget-friendly Aqara setups, to more expensive and arguably dedicated ones from the likes of Honeywell, and Abode, the latter of which – the Abode Iota Security Kit – we’ve previously reviewed. If you enjoy stopping your writing to painstakingly italicize every foreign word or phrase, or bold text or underline text or change fonts, WriteRoom is not the tool for you. If you want to obsessively track changes made in a document by a team of reviewers, no, WriteRoom can't do that. If you want an automatically generated index of every section of your document, no, WriteRoom can't do that. You can almost hear the machine gun rattle of the line printer in the background. WriteRoom configured to look like an old cathode ray terminal for a mainframe. For example, if you highlight a word and then press Command-Control-D, this displays a dictionary entry for a word. Many of the features, such as the ability to use the built-in Mac OS X speech synthesizer, are due to WriteRoom's excellent support for Apple's programming interfaces. Yes, you can insert such characters in other word processors, but none of them make it this easy. The Edit menu also directly links to the Mac OS X's wealth of special characters, bringing up the character palette so you can insert arrows (→☞➠➪➽), currency symbols (€¥£), pictographs (☼♤âœ✈✇✞), bullets (â-‰â–★✺â‚), and other characters. WriteRoom set up to look like something you'd use for writing a vampire novel. It even includes an auto-correct feature for spelling, and while I have a generational antagonism to such robotic assistance, others may not have such a bias. Since it is a writing tool, it has the usual essentials, including a superb search and replace function, and supports spelling and grammar checking, either in batch mode or as you type. This is a feature, by the way, that Microsoft Word 2011 and Apple Pages do not have. If you wish, you can have the Mac speak the text to you — a great proofreading aid — using the Mac's built-in speech synthesizer. You can check spelling as you type, check grammar and spelling, correct spelling automatically — or not.You can show invisible characters, or not. You can have a blinking insertion point, or not. WriteRoom automatically saves documents when quitting, and supports Mac OS X 10.7 Lion's versioning. You can display, in the top margin, the document title, character count, word count, line count and page count. You can save text in a number of encodings, but generally speaking, you probably want to stick to UTF-8.You can save your work in either plain text or Rich Text Format (RTF) aside from an option to export a PDF, that's it.Or pretty much any other combination of page color, background color, and text color that you wish. You can set it up to look like an old computer terminal, with a black background and green text.WriteRoom looking something like a sheet of parchment, assuming that people typed on parchment. But you don't have to use full-screen mode. Even before Mac OS X 10.7 Lion was introduced, it supported full-screen mode, which is either a blessing or a curse, depending on the size of your screen and your tendency to get lost in long lines of text. Hog Bay Software, the creators of WriteRoom, calls it "distraction free writing." And that it is: WriteRoom doesn't support bold, italics, underscore, complex rulers or most of the other features supported by modern word processors. WriteRoom looking something like WordPerfect on an IBM PC. WriteRoom is a writing tool, but it is not Microsoft Word, or even Apple Pages. There are no menu items with submenus and sub-submenus, nor are there tabs with nested tabs, or multiple edit bars, or pop-out formatting panels, or pretty much anything else you've come to expect from a word processor. You can call it a word processor but, unlike virtually every other word processor out there, it doesn't have tons of features.
